How can I extend the range of a free wifi hotspot?

If there a way (possibly using a normal wifi router) to simply extend the range of a hotspot? Essentially we have free access provided locally but it only works on our balcony. Is there a setup I can use to extend that into the house?
A repeater looks like a good bet, cheers. I don't need to be network admin to bounce a free signal do I?

1. you can get an external wifi booster antennea. i got one for the free wifi in my county and it doesn't work very well though. the transmitter is really close to. it's not worth the trouble.
