How can I get my laptop to accept free wifi signals?

My laptop is not internet ready. I bought a netgear pc card and a 2wire modem from AT&T so I can get it to go wireless inside the house. It works beautifully inside the house. How can I also pick up free wifi at places such as Starbucks? Do I need to buy a different pc card? Or do I just need to change the settings?

1. First off, you have to be in ragne of one. Go to a place like a hotel or Star Bucks. Once you are there, right click in the lower right hand corner of the screen where you see the double monitors. Click Connect to a Network. You will then see a list of networks to choose from.
